ObjectiveTo research the characteristics of wavefront aberrations(WA) of the intraocular lenses(IOLs) with different materials and designs by using of special optical metrical system, including its property and degree of WA. To discuss and analyse the mechanism and the related influencing factors of WA of the IOLs, analyse the internal relationships and causations between WA and postoperative visual symptoms of the cataract patients. All these studies would be able to offer related theoretic basis for avoiding or improving postoperative visual symptoms of the cataract patients, and would have promotable effects on the improvement of cataract surgical quality.MethodsSetting up of special optical metrical system in laboratory to perform the measure of IOLs wavefront aberration by applying the Hartmann-Shack aberrometer.. All the 9 types of IOLs were divided into 2 Groups, Group 1 consisted of 5 types of IOLs with different materials, group 2 consisted of 4 types of IOLs with different designs. Carrying out the continuous measure of IOLs aberrations under 3 mm,4 mm,5 mm,6 mm,7 mm apertures respectively. The change of aperture was similar to that of the eye pupil. All the measured data would be analysed statistically in the end.Results1. All the 9 types of IOLs had positive spherical aberration.2. With the size of aperture increased, the total aberration and the sphericalaberration of two groups were both increased accordingly. There were positive correlations between the size of aperture and the total and spherical aberrations (r = 0.6473, 0.8115; 0.6465, 0.7872; PO.001 ).3. The scale of the spherical aberration among the total aberrations under the 7 mm aperture was more than fifty percent in both two groups, the scope of which were 68.82-86.15(%), 74.16-89.00.(%) respectively.4. The numbers of IOLs according with Rayleigh under 3—7 mm apertures were 9(100%), 5(55.56%), 3(33.33%), 2(22.22%), 2(22.22%) respectively.5. In Group 1, spherical aberrations among the 5 types of IOLs with different materials were different statistically under 3—7 mm apertures respectively ( F = 7816.50, 68876.34, 441115.61, 366486.00,106285.50; PO.01 ).The measured spherical aberration were the largest significantly in the two acrylic IOLs ( SA60AT, SN60AT ) with high refractive index than in the others, between SA60AT and SN60AT, spherical aberration of the latter was more larger (P<0.05 ). The spherical aberration of acrylic IOL( AR40e ) with low refractive index was the smallest ( PO.01 ), The silicon IOL ( SI40NB ) and PMMA IOL ( PC33OUV) had properties among the above.6. In Group 2, spherical aberrations among the 4 types of IOLs with different designs were different statistically under 3-7 mm apertures respectively ( F = 10163.71, 4242.63, 25480.72, 9256.42, 2340.64; P<0.01).The IOL with the posterior surface more curved had the largest spherical aberration ( P<0.01 ), the convex-piano IOL had the smallest spherical aberration ( P<0.01), the IOL with the anterior surface more curved and the epuiconvex IOL had properties between the two types of IOLs.
