HERBA HOUTTYNIAE, the whole plant of Houttuynia cordata Thunb., is a kind of traditional Chinese medicine and also a kind of delicious vegetable. Now it had been identified as one of the most potential resources which could be used as both medicine and food by State Health Department in China Plentiful Houttuynia resources were found in Sichuan Province. The new Species Houtluynia emeiensis Z.Y.Zhu et S.L.Zhang, locally called white Yuxingcao, was found at Emei Mountain. It was also used as a kind of Chinese medicine and also a vegetable at Emei and Leshan regions. In the study, to analyze the dissociation amino acid and total amino acid of Houttuynia accessions in Sichuan Province by High Press Liquor Chromatography (HPLC); to analyze the essential oil constituents of Houttuynia by Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). The main results were as follows:1. The dissociation amino acid of the dry aerial parts of 19 Houttuynia accessions in Sichuan Province were analyzed by RP-HPLC. Among the analyzed 17 amino acids, 15 and 14 were found in the Houttuynia accessions harvested in June and October, respectively. The content of proline was the highest among all amino acid, while that of glycine was the lowest. Furthermore, The total amino acid content of the accessions harvested in October was somewhat higher than that havested in June. There was no significantly difference between the dissociative amino acid constituents of H.emeiensis Z.Y.Zhu et S.L. and Houttuynia cordata Thunb. . The dissociative amino acid contents of different Houttuynia accessions were different, so was the Houttuynia accessions harvested in two different periods. The correlation between the dissociative amino acid contents andthe chromosome number of Houttuynia accession was insignificant.2. The amino acid constituents and content of the young aerial parts and underground parts of 16 Houttuynia accessions in Sichuan Province were analyzed by RP-HPLC. The results showed that the amino acid contents of different Houttuynia accessions were different, so did the young aerial parts and underground parts of the same accessions. In most accessions, the total amino acid contents of the aerial stems and leaves were higher than that of underground stem. Among the 17 analyzed amino acids, 16 were found in the aerial stems and leaves and underground stems of all accessions. The amino acid cystine-ss-cystine was not found in any accessions. The content of glutamic acid was the highest among all amino acid in aerial parts, while that of histidine was the lowest. In underground parts, the content of glutamic acid was the highest among all amino acid, while that of tyrosine was the lowest. The total amino acid content of the accession W01-16 was the highest in aerial parts, while that of accession W01-99 was the highest in underground parts, with the value of 27.89 mg/g and 15.46 mg/g respectively. There was no significant difference between the amino acid constituents of H.emeiensis Z.Y.Zhu et S.L, and Houttuynia cordata Thunb.. The results also showed that there were higer correlationship between the contents of the amino acid with the similar chemistry structure and properties. The correlations between the contents of the different amino acid of the different parts of Houttuynia accessions were not the same. The results also showed that the correlations between the amino acids content of the young aerial parts and underground parts of Houttuynia accessions and the chromosome number was insignificant.3. The essential oil constituents of the fresh aerial, underground and dry aerial parts of 20 Houttuynia accessions in Sichuan Province were analyzed by TLC. According to the difference of the spot number and definition of the essential oil TLC pattern, the aerial parts of 20 fresh accessions were classified into 5 types, that of its underground parts into 3 types; and that of 19 dry aerial parts into 4 types. The essential oil constituents in the fresh aerial parts were different from that in underground parts. And the essential oil constituents that in the fresh plant were different from that in dry plant. The difference among the fresh accessions was more significant than that among the dry ones. And the differences among the aerial parts of the fresh accessions were more significant than that among the underground parts. There was a tendency that the spotnumbers increased with the chromosome number. The difference of essential oil constituents of H.emeiensis Z.Y.Zhu et S.L. and Houttuynia cordata Thunb. was insignificant.
