In this paper we studied the water soluble constituents of roots from Arnebia euchroma (Royle) Johnston and isolated four compounds from it. The structure determinations of other two compounds have been finished by chemical and spectroscopic methods such as UV, IR, 1~H-NMR, (13)~C-NMR and MS and two compounds have been identified as 2, 3-dihydro-2- (4 ' -hydroxy-3 ' -methoxyphenl) -3-hydroxymethyl-6-methoxybenzo-furan-5-carboxylic acid (â… ) and caffeic acid tetramer (â…¡), because the quantity of two compounds is very few. Compound I was isolated from roots of Arnebia euchroma for the first time. The pharmacodynamical study of four water soluble sections demonstrated potent anti-HIV. According to the report which caffeic acid tetramer has effective activity, we also determined the content of caffeic acid tetramer between in hadromestone and in poloem of the root by HPLC in this test. The result shows that the content of caffeic acid tetramer in hadromestone is higher than in poloem and comes to 0.26% in the root. So this test not only supplies the research of the chemical constituents but also describes the main location where caffeic acid tetramer exists.
