Objective: To observe the effect of cistanche glycosides(GCs) on a model of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in mice and its mechmism. Methods: The AD pathological model was made by intracranial lesions with mini-injection of quinolinic acid. The learning and memory of mice were observed by one time training passive avoidance step-down and Y-maze spatial location task;the acivities of SOD, GSH-Px and TChE, the content of MDA in mice brain were detectced by kits; the apoptosis of bain cells were detected by using TUNEL method and telescope; the content of calcium in AD mice brain was detected by electronic microscope. Result: GCs was shown to improve learning and memory deficiency in mice with brain lesions induced by qunolinic acid.To increase activities of SOD, GSH-Px; to reduce activities of TChE and contents of MDA in mice brain; to decrease apoptosis rate in mice brain cells significantly and to reduce the concertration of calcium in mice brain .Conclusion: The protective effects of GCs on a model of AD in mice may be involved in scavenging free radicals, antioxidation, reducing the contents of calcium and inhibition of apoptosis rate in mice brain cells induced by quinolinic acid.
