Self-setting calcium phosphate cement (CPC) can be widely used as artificial bone substitute material in orthopedic and dental for its favorable biocompatibility and osteoconductivity. But its longer setting time and poor mechanical property have made its application much more strictly, so its properties need to be improved.Calcium sulfate anhydrate is a medical material because of its excellent bioactivity, biocompatibility and nontoxicity. The effects of different amounts of calcium sulfate anhydrate on the microstructure ,the setting time ,compressive strength and phase composition of the bone cement were investigated . The results showed that the additive of CSA can adjust the setting time and the length/diameter ratio of nano-HAP in the specimens and the compressive strength of the bone cement. With CSA/α—TCP as matrix materials, n-HAP were added in the matrix.. The results showed that the strength of the specimens was increased and the setting time can be adjusted. SEM and XRD studies suggest that the addition of HAP or/and CSA affected the microstructure of the strength of the materials. The effect of all kinds of factors on the α—TCP bone cement were discussed.Hydroxyapatite (HAP) used in the experiments was prepared by wet chemical precipitation method with ultrasonic technique. Orthogonal test method was used to explore the best technical parameters. A nano-scale needle-like hydroxyapatite crystals with a larger length/diameter ratio can be gained with this process.
