Since Heald et al suggested that total mesorectal excision (TME)may reduce the local recurrance and anastomotic leakage ratefollowing resection of the rectum. The rationale has been provedrepeatedly and now it has been accepted as a golden standard technicalrule for surgical resection of the rectum. Nevertheless we have torealize that the TME is not the only determinant in local recurrence, both the grade and staging may also influence the outcome. Because ofhow to reduce its occurrence was one of the subject for concern, all thesurgery should master the principle of TME well. Here we report anoutcome of a retrospective study in 82 cases of rectal cancer treated bysurgical resection with TME technique. Objective:To evaluate the effect of radical surgery with TME forthe treatment of rectal carcinoma. Methods: 82 patients underwent radical resection with TME formSeptember, 2003 to September, 2005 were analyzed and followed upfor 1-24 months. Results: In these 82 cases, 74 cases underwent anterior resection,8 cases ultra-low anterior resection. During the postoperativefollow-up period, no local recurrence occurred, 1 case was death. Nocases occurred anastomose leakage. Conclusion: TME is an effective measure for the treatment ofrectal carcinoma.
