Objective: To study the relationship between the left ventricular remodeling and arteriosclerosis of aorta in essential hypertensive patients. Methods: Myocardial integrated backscatter (IBS), cyclic variation of IBS (CVIB) of interventricular septum (IVS-IBS and IVS-CVIB) and aortic wall (AO-IBS and AO-CVIB), the dimension of aortic root (AOD) and left atrium (LAD), left ventricular mass index (LVMI), and interventricular septum thickness (IVST) were measured respectively by echocardiography in 67 essential hypertensive (EH) patients and 32 control subjects (Nor). The early-diastolic and late-diastolic peak velocity of the mitral annulus (e, a values respectively) and the e/a ratio were measured by Doppler tissue imaging. Results: 1.IVS-IBS, AO-IBS, LVMI , LAD, AOD and IVST were higher and IVS-CVIB, AO-CVIB, e/a ratio were lower in EH group than in normal control group (PO.01~0.05); 2. There were positive correlations between LVMI and IVS-IBS, AO-IBS, respectively (r=0.335 & 0.371, P<0.01~ 0.05), and IVS-IBS and AO-IBS (r=0.458, P <0.05) in EH group. There were negative correlations between LVMI, IVST and AO-CVIB (r= — 0.299 &—0.474, P<0.01~0.05),respectively in EH group. Conclusions: Left ventricular remodeling was accompanied with aortic arteriosclerosis in hypertension. According to the ultrasonic tissue characterization changes, there may be existed a common pathological basis between them.
