Objective: To analyze the relationship between the expression of protein kinase C (PKC). P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and clinical pathological data, chemotherapeutic response and prognosis in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer. Methods: The expression of PKC and P-gp in 35 cases of ovarian cancer, 20 cases benign tumors and 20 normal ovarian epithelial tissues was determined by using immunohistochemical S-P method. Statistic analysis was performed using SPSS 11.5.Results: (l)Positive expression of PKC and P-gp in epithelial ovarian cancer was 48.6%, 42.9% separately, that was higher than the expression in beingn and normal tissues (P<0.05) ; (2)There was no significant correlation between the expression of PKC, P-gp and clinical staging histopathology and pathologic grade (P>0.05) ;(3) PKC positive cases showed less response rate of 23.5% to chemotherapy as compared with that of 66.7% for PKC negative cases(P<0.05) .The response rate to chemotherapy in patients with positive P-gp and negative P-gp was 20%, 65% separately (P<0.05);(4) There was a significant correlation between the expression of PKC with P-gp (r_S =0.429, P<0.05 ) ;(5) The survival period of the patients with PKC and P-gp positive expression was shorter than that of those with PKC negative expression, the PKC, P-gp positive patients were poorer in prognosis than negative ones. Conclusion: The over-expression of PKC , P-gp was correlated with drug resistance of clinical chemotherapy, curative effect and survival rate in ovarian cancer, there was a significant correlation between the expression of PKC and P-gp. These results suggested that PKC may play an important role in multidrug-resistance of the ovarian cancer induced by P-gp. To study the expression of PKC had a value in judging response to clinical chemotherapy and prognosis.
