Objective: To investigate the auto-antibodies on bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNC) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and to explore the pathogenesis of cytopenia in patients with SLE.Methods: Twenty-one patients with SLE and ten healthy controls were enrolled in this study. Standard hematological and BMMNC Coombs test were assayed. The correlation between the type of auto-antibodies on BMMNC , the types of peripheral auto-antibodies and the level of blood cells in patients with SLE were also investigated. Results: Positive results of BMMNC-Coombs test were seen in patients with SLE (57.1% ) , ten SLE patients with hemocytopenia ( 58.82% ) , and two SLE patients without hemocytopenia (50% ) .The positive rate of BMMNC Coombs test was higrer in patients with SLE than that in healthy controls(P=0.044), and higher in the group of SLE with hemocytopenia than that healthy controls(P=0.003), but there were no significant differences between the group of SLE without hemocytopenia and healthy controls(P=0.066), and there were also no significant differences between the group of SLE without hemocytopenia and SLE with hemocytopenia (P=l).Among the twelve cases with positive BMMNC-Coombs tests, IgM in eight(75.0%), and C3 in six (50.0%), IgG in one (8.33%), C3 in two(16.67%), IgMin four(33.33 % ), IgG+IgM in one (8.33 % ), C3+IgM in two(16.67 % ), IgG+IgM+C3 in two( 16.67%) were seen.hi the group of SLE without hemocytopenia, IgG+IgM in 8.33%, C3 in 8.33%, but no type IgA were seen . There was no significant difference among the three groups (3^2.86, P>0.05).There was a significant positive correlation between the auto-antibodies on BMMNC and peripheral anti-SSA(OR=7.00), but there was no correlation between the results of BMMNC Coombs tests and peripheral blood cell count. Conclusions: There are auto-antibodies on BMMNC in patients with SLE, and there was a significant correlation between the auto-antibodies on BMMNC and serum anti-SSA.
