Background:It is usually to implant autogenous tissue or alloplastic materials in aesthetic and reconstructive practices to achieve symmetry and balance. In clinic, plastic surgeons prefer alloplastic materials to autogenous tissue, considering the donor site morbidity or sufficient autogenous material is not available. The success of synthetic implants depends upon a specific combination of good biocompatibility, strength, flexibility, durability, resistance to infection, and easily being modified. The wide range of implantable synthetic materials can be divided into a few categories:carbon-based polymers,non-carbon-based polymers, aliphatic polyesters, metals and ceramics.Until now, there are still deficiencies for plastic surgeons to use the most common implantable synthetic materials such as silicone rubber(SR),hydroxyapatite(HA),tricalcium phosphate(TCP), expanded polytetrafluoroethyl- en(ePTFE), et al. Because each of them can't have the properties of good biocompatibility, physical nature and being easily fabrication simultaneously.Silicone can be vulcanized into solid rubber, the most common form for implants in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery.β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) is one kind of bioceramics and has inherent osteogenic property. They have different properties, such as SR has a good physical property, durability, high resistance to degradation, and not be proved to have significant clinical toxicity or allergic reactions, but it has a inert nature due to its silicon-oxygen bonds, resulting in forming a capsule by recipient.β-TCP shows good compatibility with soft and hard tissue, it can be produced synthetically in a dense form(in which it originally was used in alveolar ridge augmentation),but this form has been found to be difficult to shape and prone to migration and extrusion.Porous form has been much more successful but can not tolerate singnificant load bearing and tend to crack. Objective:A novel compositeβ-Tricalcium phosphate/Silicone(β-TCP/SR) consisting ofβ-TCP mixed into SR was developed, being expected to give the bioactivity ofβ-TCP to an elastic...
