Purpose: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a commoneye disease which may results in blindness in developed countries. With the development of society, its incidence rises up and acuity of vision could be impared by choroidal neovascularization (CNV), retinal pigment epithelium detachment and macular hemorrhage. This phenomenon has close relationship with the senile change of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. Researches revealed that the accumulation of lipofuscin in RPE cells may induce the cell ageing and degeneration. It is, therefore, important to prevent RPE ageing and recovering its activity in order to prevent the occurrence of AMD. Meclofenoxate hydrochloride is a stimulant to central nervous system in clinic, it can remove lipofuscin and oxygen free radical from cells and protect cell membranes. Our experiments aimed to establish a model of RPE lipofuscin formation, observe the effects of meclofenoxate hydrochloride on cultured human RPE cells in vitro.
