Background and ObjectivesPterygium is a common and frequent ocular surface disease and its causes have not been completely uncovered and it is liable to recur after resection. There is a thin crust of tear film on eyeball and well ocular surface is based on stable tear film. There have not been reached the same conclusions about the relationship between pterygium and the function of tear film in pterygium eye. In this study , breaking-up time(BUT) of tear film in pterygium eye was observed. The changes of cytobiology of pterygium was observed with techniques of impression cytology and Hematoxylin and eosin stain(HE stain) and the expression of mucin in pterygium was observed through techniques of immunohistochemical stain of MUC5AC. The relevance of pterygium and tear film was willing to investigate. It is expecte'd to recognize pterygium in a whole and to provide theoritical grounds for clinic and new thoughts for disease control .Materials and MethodsThe first part: A perspective analysis of 38 patients with monocular progressing primary pterygium in out-patient department of ophthalmology in the hospital from July 2002 to December 2003 was performed. The 38 pterygium eyes were considered as case group and the 38 normal eyes as control group. All involved eyes were undergone the examination of BUT and impression cytology. The results of BUT were recorded. The grades of squamous metaplasia of conjunctivae were classified according to the chart of Nelson's classifiction. The data of BUT in two groups were processed by t- test...
