Object:①To investigate the expression of MUC5AC and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in human recurring pteryguim through immunohistochemistry.②To evaluate the action of MUC5AC and iNOS in the mechanism of recurring pterygium.③To study the correlation between the expression of MUC5AC and iNOS in recurring pterygium.④To study the correlation between the expression of MUC5AC and tear-film stability.Methods:22 samples of recurring pteryguim,6 samples of primary pteryguim and 5 samples of normal conjunctive were collected for the present study. The course of recurring pteryuim is about from 6 months to ten years after the first pteryguim operation.These samples were cut off from surgical operations in ophthalmology section of First Affiliated Hospital of Medical College of Shehezi University from september in 2008 to september in 2010. All samples were diagnosed.Each sample was examined by BUT and Schirmer I test before operation. The pathological specimen was cut in the thickness of 3um. Immuno-histochemical SP staining for MUC5AC and iNOS were made. The results of immunohistochemisy were determined by the intensity of staining and the number of positive cells. The expressions of MUC5AC and iNOS in recurring pterygium, in primary pteryguim and normal conjunctiva were analyzed.Results:①The respective of BUT in primary pteryguim,recurring pteryguim and normal conjunctive is (10.40±0.16)s, (9.65±0.26)s, (9.00±0.55)s,there exists significant difference between each two groups.②The respective of Schirmer I test in primary pteryguim,recurring pteryguim and normal conjunctive is (10.86±0.83)mm/5min,(9.97±0.34)mm/5min,(9.32±0.51) mm/5min, there exists significant difference between each two groups.③There was significant difference in expression of MUC5AC in each two groups and the expression of positive goblet cells between recurring pteryguim and normal conjunctive.④Using the semiquantitative anaylsis to study the expression of iNOS in normal conjuntiva,in primary pteryguim and in recurring ptertguim,there exists significant difference,P<0.05.⑤Spearman correlation analysis,there exists the negative correlation between MUC5AC expression and BUT,there exists the postive correlation between the expression of MUC5AC and iNOS.Conclusion:①There exists the breakdown in tear-film stability and alteration in two films.②There exists the alteration of goblet cells both in quantity and appearance, may be has a correlation in recurring ptery-guim.③There has postive correlation between the expression of MUC5AC and iNOS,iNOS may improve the expression of MUC5AC and break the tear-film stability.④There exists the negative correlation between MUC5AC expression and BUT,there has correlation between the alteration MUC5AC and the depress tear-film stability.
