BackgroundEsophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA) remain commonest malignancies in northern China, especially in Linzhou city (formerly Linxian) and the nearby countries, such as Huixian and Anyang in Henan province. The GCA-to-SCC ratio is approximately 1:3.2. SCC and GCA is characterized by their similar geographical distribution. The ratio between the incidence rates of high-and low- risk areas could be as high as 500:1. Mass survey and follow-up studies in the high-incidence area indicate that the esophageal and gastric cardia carcinogensis is characterized by multi-carcinogens and multiple genetic variations evolved in the progressive multistage. However, the molecular mechanism of these two malignancies is still unclear. Another problem is the absence of specific biomarkers for early diagnosis as well as treatment.Cadherin adhesion, one the member of in Ca2+-dependent cell-cell binding glycoprotein family, has been demonstrated to mainly distribut in epithelial cells and plays a critical role in mediating cell junction. It also takes part in cell differentiation...
