Objective: DMAA-induced apoptosis human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells at the different concentrations were investigated in this study. Methods: Human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells were cultured in RPMI 1640 containing 10% new-born bovine serum and incubated with different concentrations of DMAA. The cytoxicity caused by DMAA was assessed by the MMT assay. The apoptosis or necrosis was detected by gel electrophoresis. Results: DMAA can induce the apoptosis of A549. The relationship between the cytoxicity of DMAA in A549 cells and the concentration was not completely in a concentration-dependent manner. At certain range of concentrations, the cytoxicity of DMAA in tumor cells decreased along with the increased of the concentration of DMAA.Conclusion: The results suggested that the death of A549 cells caused by DMAA is due to both apoptosis and necrosis. DMAA primarily induced apoptotic cell death at low concentration, while at high concentration DMAA mainly caused necrosis cell death.
