Despite the advances in surgical techniques and the availability of newly developed antibiotics, Chronic osteomlitis after surgical procedures and trauma continue to be a difficult problem for orthopaedic surgeons, associated with avascular necrosis of bone and formation of sequestrum. Traditionally,we proceed with debridement of the dead infected tissue and obliteration of dead space, use closed suction irrigation pumps and do not use secondary bone graft to repair the bone defect until no evidence of infection present themselves after 3-6 months, this increases hospital stay and suffering of the patients. The drug delivery system (DDS) has the advantage of high tissue concentrations of antibiotics with relatively low serum levels. This avoids some of the toxicity associated with systemics. The use of biodegradable DDS for chronic osteomyelitis is an attractive alternative.lt deliver high tissue levels of antibiotics, obliterates dead space, aids bone repair and dose not need to be rmove. The most existing DDS is massive, and not plastict. The antibiotics it carried is very small and the time of releasing antibiotics is very short. Some burst release drug is evident, some has the antigenicity. So we developed a sort of new type plasticit DDS,cooperating with South China University of Technology. Serial experimental studies gave some remarkable results as follows: While possesseing excellent biocompatility and security, the sort of new type plasticit DDS can slowly deliver the antibiotic at the implant site.It can effectively treat chronic osteomyelitis...
