Scutellaria barbata (D. Don), labiatae, is a traditional Chinese medicine, and widely used as an anti-inflammatory and a diuretic drug. The whole plant can be used for medicine. Several studies have indicated that extracts of S. barbata have growth inhibitory effects on a number of human cancers, and its treatment uses for lung cancer, digestive system cancers, hepatoma, breast cancer, and chorioepithelioma have been reported for a long time. From the 70% ethanol extract of the whole herb of S. barbata, by solvent extraction, repeated column chromatography and recrystallization, 14 constituents were isolated. On the basis of physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic analysis, they were identified as follows: p-hydroxybenzaldehyde (1), 3,4-dihydroxybenzoicacid (2), p-hydroxyaceophenone (3), 5,7,4'-trihydroxy-8-methoxyflavone (4), 5,7,4'-trihydroxy-6-methoxyflavone (5), 5,7,4'-tr -ihydroxyflavone (6), luteolin (7), 5,4'-dihydroxy-6,7,3',5'-tetramethoxyflavone (8), naringenin (9), 5-hydroxy- 4-methoxyflavone-7-O-α-L-rhamnosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (10), scutellaric acid (11), p-coumaric acid acetate (12), β-sitosterol (13), daucosterol (14). Among them, compounds 8,10,12 were isolated from the plant for the first time. The MTT experiments in vitro showed that the chloroform and n-butanol extracts of S. barbata had significant growth inhibitory effects on the H460 and Sf188 cancer cells.
