Euphorbia kansui T. N. Liou ex T. N. Wang (Euphorbiaceae) is abundantly distributed in the northwestern China. The dried roots of Euphorbia kansui are known as "Kan Sui" in Chinese medicine. "Kan Sui" was recorded in Sheng Nung's Herbal as a low grade drug and has been used as a herbal remedy for edema, ascites, and cancer. Previous investigations of E. kansui have yielded numerous ingenane-type and jatrophane-type diterpenes. Euphane/tirucallane-type triterpenes were isolated from this plant also. We didn't found the reports about the study of chemical constituents of the processed "Kan Sui".We studied the processed kansui carefully in my experience. 11 compounds were isolated from the processed kansui with silica gel, ODS and HPLC, etc. On the basis of chemical and spectral methods, they are identified as 5, 20-actonyl-3-(2', 3' -dimethylbutanoate)-13-dodecanoate-4a-hydroxy-ingenol(1), 4-O-acety1-5-O benzoyl -3β-hydroxy-20-deoxyingenol (2), kansuinin A (3), kansuinin B (4), kansuinin E (5), squalene (6), eupha-8,24-diene-3β-ol (7), 3-dodecanoate -olean-12-en (8), 3-acetyl -olean-11,13(18)-dien (9), phthalic acid bis-(2-ethyl-hexyl) ester (10), β-sitosterol (11). Among them, (1) and (2) are new compounds, (6), (8), (9) and (10) were isolated from this plant for the first time.
