Objective To explore the expression of interleukin-13 and relationship with airway hyperresponsiveness in patirnts with Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Methods The study group included 30 cases in remission stage and active attack separately, control group had 30 cases. The venous blood was drawn ,and the IL-13 level from serum were detected by ELISA methods. At the same time FEV1 (%pre), FEV1/FVC, FEV1 variation rate were measured .The results of determination were analyzed statistically.Result The serum IL-13 level from asthmatic patients in active attack 68.18±2.24 (pg/ml) was higher than that in remission stage 43.49±4.04( pg/ml), P<0.01. Both were higher than that of normal control group 25.45±5.49 (pg/ml) ,P<0.01. Linear correlation analysis shows that the serum IL-13 level is positively correlated to the FEV1(%pre) and FEV1 variation rate in active attack.(r=-0.735,r=0.763,P<0.01) and in remission stage (r=-0.563,r=0.357,P<0.01).The serum IL-13 level from COPD patients in active attack 51.55±3.16 (pg/ml) was higher than that of in remission stage 34.89±2.16( pg/ml ),P<0.01.Both were higher than that of normal control group, P<0.01.Linear correlation analysis shows that the serum IL-13 level is positively correlated to the FEVl(%pre) and FEV1 variation rate in active attack,r=-0.661,r=0.580,p<0.01,the serum IL-13 level is not correlated to the FEV1(%pre) and FEV1 variation rate in remission stage,r=-0.099,r=0.095,P>0.05.Conclusion IL-13 can play an important role in pathology with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which may be one of reason formulating airway hyperresponsibility. The study suggested that IL-13 level may be a helpful index for monitoring and instructing the treatment in asthma and COPD ,which will have some clinical meaning.
