Objective: To evaluate the effect and safety of L-ornithine-L-aspartate on C-Type Hepatic Encephalopathy.Methode: In this randomized controlled clinical study, 90 patients with C-Type Hepatic Encephalopathy and terminal Hepatic Cirrhosis (Child-Pugh C) randomized into three groups: 30 patients received L-ornithine-L-aspartate (OA) at the dose of 20g per day for one week(the HT group); 30 patients received OA 10g per day for one week (the LT group), and the other 30 patients received Arginine 20g per day for one week as the control group. Both of the three groups received the same fundamental therapy includes limited the protein intaken, Vitamin and nutrition supporting, Lactulose oral administration and acidation the intestinal. The effective and side effects of OA were evaluated by the change of Portal-system Encephalopathy Index (PSEI); plasma amonia (NH3); Hepatic Function indexes including alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), serum bilirubin (SB), and Albumin (ALB); total cholesterol (TC); plasma thromboplastin (PT) and PH pore and after the treatments. The efficiency of the treatments were evaluated either. Results: There was more significant difference of NH3, PSEI and the total efficiency between the HT, LT and the control group; there was also more significant difference of ALT, AST and SB between HT and the other groups; each groups has some change of ALB, TC, PT, PH after the treatments, the HT group has a significant difference and there was no significant difference between the LT and control group. The control group has more side effects (mainly the metabolic alkalosis) than the treatment group. Conclusion: L-ornithine-L-aspartate may used to cure C-Type Hepatic Encephalopathy effectively and safely. Arginine is also a effective subordinary therapy to HE, it is better to evaluate the PH during the treatment.
