Vascular dementia is a progressive hindrance of aptitude after cerebrovascular diseases, including several kinds of dementia caused by ischemia, hemorrhage, anoxic and ischemia. It is characterized by the damage of memorying and cognizing. With the development of dementia, the patient loses the capacity of looking after himself, which will aggravate the burden of the whole family and the society. In recent years, the incidence of vascular dementia rose quickly, even exceeded Alzheimer's Disease in our country and became the first pathogeny of dementia. Therefore,to investigate vascular dementia basiclly and clinically has great clinical and social significance. In the present study, vascular dementia was induced by a permanent bilateral ligation of common carotid arteries (2V0).After operation,it caused cell death by releasing free radicals,NO, inflammatory and cellular factors. So the excessive production of free radicals and iNOS is probably an important mechanism.Curcumin is an effective anti-inflammatory,anti oxidant drug, which can inhibit NF κ B activation and the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2.Therefore,the aim of the present study is to investigate the efects of curcumin on the spatial learning and memory of vascular dementia rats by a permanent bilateral ligation of common carotid arteries (2VO) and the influence of curcumin on biochemcial indexes in vascular dementia rats, the expression of iNOS in the vascular dementia rats and the influence of curcumin on them. The purpose is to explore the effects and mechanisms of curcumin on vascular dementia rats, and try to find a new way of prevention and treatment of VD. Objection: In the present study, we determined whether curcumin can...
