Anorexia is common among 1 to 6 year-old children and one of the frequently identified eating disorders in children's clinics. Symptoms include poor appetite, various degrees of weight loss and slow growth which subsequently may adversely affect children's general health, nutritional status and intellectual development. This has brought to the attention of pediatricians. However, etiology of anorexia is poorly understood and needs more research. Early in 1970s, vitamin A had been reported to be associated with appetite. Vitamin A deficiency can cause mucosal structural abnormality of the test buds and affect the gustatory quality. Little has been reported on the relationship between vitamin A deficiency and anorexia.
