| BACKGROUNDTrichloroethylene is a familiar organic solvent used in hardware, electron, toy making and print industry, which can be used as a solvent to remove grease from metal parts, dry cleaning agent, solvent, extraction solvent and so on. Occupational exposure to trichloroethylene is known to cause a variety of health hazards. In the past, the studies of the toxicity of TCE focus on its hepatic and renal damage, neurotoxic responses, health risk and testicular toxicity. In recently, many studies show that it can result dermatitis with skin irritation, which occur as a result of exposure. Many scholars think the mechanism of TCE induced skin damage is TCE activated T_H cells that induce a localized inflammatory reaction called delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) or Type IV hypersensitivity, however this kind of mechanism sometime cannot explain TCE induced skin damage in clinic. Occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) is an inflammatory response of the skin and invoked as a result of exposure to an exogenous substance found in the workplace. Base on the mechanistic differences, contact dermatitis was divided into irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) and allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), and ICD take even more parts in contact dermatitis. Because of the mechanism of Type IV hypersensitivity sometime cannot explain it induced skin damage in clinic, so we suppose that skin irritation or ICD caused by TCE take some roles in the mechanism of TCE induced skin damage.OBJECTIVEThe objectives of the present study are to investigate the irritation of TCE on the dorsal skin of BALB/c hairless mice and the time-dose-effect relationship (TDER).
