In recent years, both medicine and philosophy paid more and more attention to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In the philosophy of science circle in particular, since Professor Joseph Rouse put forward "All sciences are of local attribute", quite a few insightful men began to look upon TCM with the same view with upon western sciences. This thesis takes TCM as the subject and illustrates a case of local knowledge.TCM lacks the research on primary formation time, which can especially indicate the origin and development of a local characteristic during a separate civilization period. Therefore, the thesis focuses on the formation of basic TCM theory. The fundamental TCM theory of is the Qi (the invisible basic substance that forms the universe and produces everything in the world through its movement and changes) theory, which came into being from the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States to the Western Han and Eastern Han. This theory developed based on the ideological context at that time.TCM was not taken as a scientific discipline before the basic theory took shape, and was called medical activity. The understanding and interpretation on TCM was closely in line with the common ideological cognition. The ideological cognition paradigm changed from ghosts and gods' will paradigm prior to the Spring and Autumn Period to the natural paradigm after the Warring States, and at the same time, medical activities followed the ideological paradigm up and down. When medical activity and ideological paradigm met each other, the Qi theory, which comprehended everything on the earth, gradually grew up. Then and there, the theory denoted both the Qi theory in ideological circle and the natural paradigm. When or after the natural paradigm was established and the general Qi theory was formed, an independent Qi theory exclusive to TCM emerged. The article is expected to contribute to the embodiment of local knowledge.
