Objectives: To observe the clinical and electroencephalographic characteristics and evaluate the intelligence, personality and behavior profiles of the children with BECCT in its active phase. Methods: (1).The characteristics of the clinical manifestations and EEG were restrospectively studied in 366 children with benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes. All the children were diagnosed in the neurologic out-patient clinic of QiLu hospital from December 1986 to March 2006 and EEG examination was given at least once, when they were examined, open-close eyes reaction, lighting stimulation and hyperventilation test were operated. If there were no epileptic discharges in the wake, the EEG examination were operated in the induced sleep. All patients were followed up until they were free of seizures for 3 years or the EEG was normal. (2).The 38 BECCT children diagnosed in the neurologic out-patient clinic and age-, sex-,educated level- matched controls were evaluated with Chinese modification of Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Eysenck personality questionnaire(EPQ), Achenbach children Behavior Checklist. Results: 1. The clinical characteristics of BECCT: (l).Age at onset of BECT varies from 3.4 years to 12.1 years with a peak at 4-10 years(80.6%), it is slightly more common in boys with a sex rate of 1.3:1.(2 )In 86.7% of the patients, the seizure is associated with sleep, mainly shortly after sleep(56.1%) or before awakening(32%).
