Colorectal cancer is one of the commonest malignant tumors in gastrointestinal tract and the second leading cause of cancer death in Western communities. The lymphatic and hematogenous metastasis of the cancer often occure in early stage. Up to new, there are no satisfying therapeutic measures and only a small proportion of these patients may be treated by surgical resection or radiochemical therapy which affect the patients' physical and mental health seriously. Therefore ,it is a urgent topic confronted by most medical science workers to find a economical and effective therapy of colon carcinomer which can be widely used in clinic. PDT is a promising novel treatment modality for cancer. The first-generation photosensitizer ProfrinII could possibly establish a more selective accumulation in tumor tissue and, when absorbing at longer wavelength, could result in larger volumes of necrosis with less phototoxicity and side effects. We studied ProfrinII photodynamic therapy and profrinII nanoparticles photodynamic therapy in an human colon carcinoma LoVo in vitro and vivo, assessed short-term and long-term effects of profrinII nanoparticles PDT treatment in a nude mice tumor xenograft.
