The antiviral activity of Abidol hydrocloride, a new antiviral agent, is most pronounced against influenza of the A and B antigenic type. Abidol has been developed and licensed for treatment and prophylaxis of influenza and other acute respiratory viral infection. In this paper, the influenza virus and the biological characteristics of influenza virus were briefly described. We focused largely on the actuality and the development of anti-influenza agents. Taking Abidol as the lead compound, on the basis of our former reaserch work the synthesis of derivatives of Abidol were studied, and the synthetic routes were designed and the processes were greatly improved. Modifications were made at 1-position, 2-position, and 4-position on the indole ring. Totally 20 target compounds that never reported in literatures were designed and synthesized, and their structures were confirmed by ~1H-NMR and MS. Their antiviral activities are being under invertigation.
