Objective To compare the general quality of life and mental health status of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and to describe changes in life quality of patients among the two groups within six months. Method Questionnaire interview was conducted in two comparable groups, which respectively was made of 45 patients with severe COPD and 35 patients with NSCLC. MOS Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) were applied during the interview respectively at discharge, three months and six months after discharge.Results 1.SF-36 score: (1) Patients with severe COPD had significantly lower score than patients with NSCLC in terms of physical functioning, vitality, mental health, social functioning, and general health during three surveys (P <0.05). (2) Patients with severe COPD had significantly decreased score in terms of physical functioning, vitality, mental health, bodily pain and general health within six months (P<0.05). There is no significant difference in scores of role-physical, role-emotional and social functional (P> 0.05). (3) Patients with NSCLC had significantly decreased score in terms of physical functioning, role-physical, vitality, mental health, social functional, bodily pain and general health within six months(P<0.05).
