Background and AimsUlcerative colitis(UC) is chronic inflammatory disorder involving inprimarily the mucosa and submucosa of colon. Although the exact phathogenesis of UC is still unknown, it has been widely accepted that dysfunction of mucosal immune response is involved in development of UC. Cytokines have been shown to play an important role in the phathogenesis of UC. Phosphoinositol 3-kinase/Akt pathway has been demonstrated to correlate with produce and modulation of various cytokines. Thus, the aims of the study were to investigate the effects of Wortmannin, a special PI3K inhibitor, on dextran sulphate sodium(DSS)-induced colitis model in mice in order to provide experimental evidence that Wortmannin serves as a possible novel drug for treatment of UC.Methods32 balb/c mice were divided into four groups: normal control group,DSS-induced colitis group, DMSO control group(1% Dimethyl sulphoxide, DMSO, ip), Wortmannin group (Wortmannin, 0.7mg/Kg weight/day, ip). Colitis was induced by feeding 5%DSS in the drinking water, and evaluated...
