Abstract/Summary:
The biomechanics of head injury is to study the dynamic response of the human head undergoing external loads. The response of head impact can provide us with information to identify the mechanisms of the skull fracture, brain tissue laceration, coup-contrecoup injury, subdural hematoma, and diffuse axonal injury. These injury mechanisms in turn can help us to improve the design of safety devices, such as airbag, safety belt, safety helmet, so that the incident of head injury can be reduced. Head impact injury study in China still is in its infancy. This research developed a 3D finite element model of the human brain based on CT scan images of a volunteer. Techniques such as image processing and meshing were applied to obtain geometric data and develop finite element mesh. The model consisted of left and right brain, cerebellar ,falx cerebri and cerebellum. It contains 26260nodes and 30837elements. Frontal head impact was simulated using this model. Impact energy, strain and stress of the brain tissue were obtained from the impact simulation. The brain model developed in this research provide a base model for further development of whole head finite element model.
