Background. General anesthesia is often used among patients who are older than 70 years during some abdominal surgical procedures. Usually it takes approximately one hour for these patients to awaken in ICU. Pat ient-ventilator asynchrony might occur when they are awake because of the dissynchrony between the mechanically assisted ventilation and the patient's neural breathing. Patients became anxious in accompany with rapid inspiration, increased blood pressure and heart rate, and decreased SPaO2 which have negative effects on postoperative recovery.Objective. This study aimed to compare the effect of intravenous infusion of valium and fentanyl on the hemodynamic stability, the occurrence of urine retention and the duration of the use of ventilator after the administration. It also aimed to summarize the care which should be provided during the occurrence of patient-ventilator asynchrony.Subjects and methods. A total of 100 patients who were admitted in the ward of general surgery between September 2003 and February 2006 in Wei-hai Hospital were randomly grouped to the experimental group or the control group with 50 patients each.
