Background Cardiovascular disease has become the most serious health problem in the world. The risk factors include aging, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, etc. It's basically important to discriminate the pathophysiologic state from the general aging. Through almost half a century's scientific tests and clinic application, echocardiography has become a routine method to investigate the cardiac structure and function. As a useful, invasive and economy method, it has been accepted by medical workers. However, the normal range of echocardiography was formed in the 1980's, and the people's intakes and lifestyle has changed a lot, so the old standard should be adjusted. To determine the normal range of echocardiogrphy values and the influence of aging and surface area on the values and the physiological changes of left ventricular systolic and diastolic functions and to bring out a standard methodology of echocardiography examination, we performed the test in Beijing by a large sample analysis;METHODS 22 hospitals in Beijing were included in this multi-center cooperation, which was organized by the Medical Association of Echocardiography in Beijing. Standard measurement protocol was set up by experts in this field and the stuff charged with the work from every hospital involved were trained for the measurement. M-mode , 2-D, tissue Doppler and Doppler echocardiogrphy were performed in 2332 random patients from the 22 hospitals involved by trained operators using the standard methodology established by experts of Beijing echocariography association. 81values were detected in each patient and the data were analyzed by sex, age and surface area. Data were input to EPI Data 2.0C and were analyzed with the use of a statistical software program (CHISS) . For comparison ofthe echocardiographic data among various groups, data were analyzed by 1-way ANOVA with Scheffe's correction for significance. Multiple linear regression was used to investigate the correlation between the parametric variables. The results are expressed as mean_SD. A value of P< 0.05 was considered statistically significant.RESULTS The diameters of LV, RV, IVS, LA and RA show a better positive correlation with surface area than aging. LVEFs in 60s or older are higher than young people, while diastolic function tends to degrade in older people. In 60s and older, MV E/A<1, DT is prolonged, pulmonary vein S/D>1.4, TDI mitral annulus Em/Am<1, and IVRT is prolonged. In smokers, MV E/A<1, TDI mitral annulus Em/Am<1 (P<0.001) .CONCLUSIONS Datas exhibits mormal distribution and good repeatability. The factors that influence echocardiography values includes sex, smoke and drink, and aging is a indepent factor for systolic and diastolic functions.
