Partâ… Establishment and imaging evaluation of a rabbit model bearing liverVX2 tumorObjective To establish an animal model bearing VX2 liver tumor in rabbits. To monitor rabbit VX2 hepatic tumor and to analyze its imaging features with computed tomography(CT) and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI).Material and methods Twenty-five New Zealand rabbits were implanted into the left liver lobe with VX2 tumor for establishment of animal models. After the tumors were allowed to grow for two weeks, CT and MRI were performed on the rabbits weekly. Among them, five rabbits were sacrificed randomly after they were scanned by CT and MR, and their livers were harvested for histopathology examination, and to compare the results of histopathology with imaging. Results All of 25 rabbits were successfully implanted with VX2 tumor in the livers by imaging and paunching. The tumors demonstrated itself as hypodensity or isodensity on plain CT scans, and peripheral rim enhancement of the tumor on arterial phase images. While MRI scans, the tumors were seen as hypointensity on T1WI, and hyperintensity on T2WI and DWI, and the profile of the tumor appears very clear on DWI. The regional necrosis of the tumor was observed as trait of intensity as free water on T1WI,T2WI and DWI. Imaging of VX2 hepatic tumor are in concordance with histopathology of it.Conclusion The rabbit model bearing VX2 liver tumor can be duplicated by the highly successful rate. CT and MRI can reveal the growth behavior and pathological changes of the tumors, and multiple imaging evaluation is very useful in monitoring and screening experimental animal. This animal model can be used to research on imaging and therapy of liver tumor.
