This study was performed under the direction of both clinical theory of Chinese medicine and diagnostic theory of medicine. There were 84 adult patients who were compatible with diagnostic criteria of exogenous cough, processing correlative study between the syndromes of Chinese medicine and laryngoscopic images. The inspection of Chinese medicine was extended through the observation of laryngoscopic images. Subsequently, the character of the syndromes of Chinese medicine was summarized. Using laryngoscopic examination, exogenous cough could be correctly assessed in clinical Chinese medicine. Accordingly, exogenous cough and impairment of Qi flow in the throat could be managed efficiently. This article included three parts: Review of Journal, Observational study between clinical symptoms and laryngoscopic images of the syndrome of Chinese medicine, and Preliminary classification and statistics of herbs with the function of removing the Qi flow impairment from the throat. On the part of Review of Journal: included chief point of view about exogenous cough in ancient Chinese medicine, treatment of exogenous cough using either modern Chinese medicine or integrated medicine, researches about management of impairment of Qi flow in the throat due to exogenous cough using either Chinese medicine or the method of removing the Qi flow impairment from the throat, ancient and modern points of view about larynx, and the correlation between larynx and viscera. On the part of clinical study: The table of investigation and observation dealing with exogenous cough in first visiting patients was designed under the direction of clinical theory of Chinese medicine. 84 adult patients who were compatible with diagnostic criteria of exogenous cough were enrolled in the study group. Those were examined by means of applying indirect laryngoscope and fiber optic laryngoscope. Demographic data and clinical presentations were recorded. Assessing the correlation between laryngoscopic images in patients with exogenous cough and the impairment of Qi flow in the throat relating to Chinese medicine was performed through the signs of laryngoscopic images. The results showed that there were no relations between onset of exogenous cough and age as well as gender. Most frequently the patients were suffered from headache, throat discomfort, chills and fever. The types of syndrome were often exogenous wind-cold, exogenous wind-heat, and those accompanying with impairment of Qi flow in the throat. The observational results of laryngoscopic images in the throat suggested that there were local abnormalities in the surface appearance of the throat regardless of exogenous wind-cold, exogenous wind-heat, or exogenous wind-dryness. The results also elucidated that there were abnormalities in the throat, mucosa, lymphatic follicles, lateral cricothyroid ligaments, tonsil bodies, epiglottis, arytenoid areas, vestibular ligaments, or vocal cords whether syndromes of exogenous cough belonging to wind-cold, wind-heat , wind-dryness or not. Therefore it was strongly supported the existence of impairment of Qi flow in the throat in patients with exogenous cough clinically. On the part of preliminary classification and statistics of herbs with the function of removing the Qi flow impairment from the throat: Selecting effective drugs in treating exogenous cough and classifing the drugs were executed through searching for Chinese Herbs Dictionary. It provided reference to treating exogenous cough clinically by way of selecting many kinds of different qualities and effectivenesses of herbs with the function of removing the Qi flow impairment from the throat according to syndrome differentiation. The idea of treating exogenous cough by removing the Qi flow impairment from the throat was broadened.
