With the recent worldwide recognition of traditional Chinese medicines as potential drug resources, the Chinese government has established a series of comprehensive policies for the standardization and modernization of traditional Chinese medicines. The most important thing is how to control the quality of traditional Chinese medicines. Now, the most commonly method is to select some of the active or marker components in an herb for identification and quantity analyze. But it is not scientifically proven to guarantee the effects of traditional Chinese medicines by just controlling the marker compounds of the raw materials or final products. The major challenge in applying modern methods for the control quality is to search for new methods, which can evaluate the synergic effects of all the herbal components in one single formulas of a traditional Chinese medicine product. A chromatogram fingerprint of a traditional Chinese medicine can be a comprehensive quantifiable identification method to confirm authenticity as well as to evaluate quality, and stability of traditional Chinese medicine herbs and products. The traditional Chinese medicine fingerprint is not only a mode and technique for traditional Chinese medicine quality control, but also a research mode and strategy for traditional Chinese medicine theories and new drugs development. Currently, some modern analytic methods are used to provide the chromatogram fingerprint, we used HPLC to established fingerprints of two traditional Chinese herbs.Radix ophiopogonis is the dried root of Ophiopogon japonicus(Thumb.) Ker-Gawler. Steroidal saponins (ophiopogonins)are Main chemical constituents of Radix ophiopogonis, and the content of ophiopogonin D is the most one in them. And Ophiopogonin D is the major bioactive ingredients of Radix Ophiopogonis responsible for ophiopogonis's pharmacological activity for cardiovascular diseases. A plenty of literatures on Radix ophipogonis studies indicate that ophiopogonin D was typically chosen as marker compounds for thepurpose of quality control and identification of Radix Ophiopogonis.Herba Taxilli is the dried branch with leaf of Taxillus chinensis(DC.) Danser.. Flavone glycosides are Main chemical constituents of Herba Taxilli, avicularin and quercitrin are two of the most important Flavone glycosides. In our paper, we will introduct three parts of our experiments. First of all, we extracted and Isolated Ophiopogonin D and Ophiopogonin D'from Radix ophiopogonis, Isolated avicularin from Hypericum perforatum L. Then Purified them to 99ï¼…. Secondly, we selected Ophiopogonin D as marker compounds and established a HPLC fingerprint of Radix ophiopogonis. It gave us a easy and efficient method to identify the Radix ophiopogonis and control their quanlities. Thirdly, we selected quercitrin as marker compounds and established a HPLC fingerprint of Herba Taxilli, It gave us a easy and efficient method to identify the Herba Taxilli, and control their quanlities. The HPLC fingerprints of Radix ophiopogonis and Herba Taxilli have good characteristics and reproducibility.
