Objective Bone mineral density (BMD) of the mandible was measured by useddual-energy X-ray absoptiometery(DXA), which explicate the correlation betweenmandible and all skeletons in body, to provide theory for the clinical practice. Methods The study design was to recruit heathy volunteer in northern Chinese at 20female and 20 male subjects in each of decades from 20 to 80 years of age. We used DXAto scaning the lumbar spine of everyone as central group, scaning the mandible at facadeand lateral.By adjusted the regions of intrest (ROI) ten times at the mental region anddoubule mandibular angles, we can obtain BMD of the the mental region and doubulemandibular angles. BMD of the mental region, the left and fight mandibular angles andthe lumbar spine were statistucal analysised. Results Statistucal analysis software of SPSS 11.5 and JMTJFX 10.31 were used toanalysis MD of the left and right mandibular angles, the mental region and the lumbarspine. The results of MD of the mental region, the left mandibular angle, the rightmandibular angle and the lumbar spine were 1.3109±0.0355g/cm2, 1.0489±0.0137g/cm2, 1.0547±0.0141g/cm2, 1.1211±0.0172g/cm2.The results indicated that therewere significant difference and correlation among BMD of mental region of mandible, theleft mandibular angle, the right mandibular angle and the lumbar spine (P<0.01). Thereis no statistical significance difference between the left mandibular angle and the rightmandibular angle (P>0.05). Significant difference was showed in BMD of the leftmandibular angle or the right mandibular angle or the lumbar spine between the femalsand the males (P<0.01), but no significant difference was showed in mental region ofmandible (P>0.05). Significant difference were showed in mental region of mandible, thedouble mandibular angles and the lumbar spine after the ages of 40 to 49 years(p<0.01),but no significant before those years (P>0.05).Conclusions We obatain BMD of the mental region, left, right mandibular angle andlumbar spine, which can provid a guide for the clinical practice in the mandible. Weshould pay attention to assay BMD of the mandible and lumbar spine among the peopleafter ages 40-49 years old in order to precaution osteoporosis, because of their BMD ofthe mandible and lumbar spine declined obviously. There are significant correlation atBMD between the mandible and the lumbar spine, it may be concludied thatBMD of the mandible may be an appropriate measurement site for evaluation of sketelal status in osteoporosis.
