Effects Of Ginkgo Biloba Extract (Shuxuening) On Postoperative Cognitive Function In The Elderly

Objective To observe the effect of ginkgo biloba extract (Suxuening) on postoperative cognitive function in elderly. Methods Sixty 65～85 yrs old patients who Would take operation on gallbladder or rectum, colon and lacteal gland were randomly divided into groupⅠ(n=30) and groupⅡ(n=30), all patients had never suffered from psychosis and nervous system disease and never take medicine which treating above-mentioned disease. Patients from groupⅠreceived 20ml injection Suxuening (including 16.8mg flavonol Glycoside and 2.80mg bilobalide) which were diluted into 500ml glucose, one time per day; Patients from groupⅡdid not receive Suxuening before operations. All patients in two groups received inhalation combined vein anesthesia, and took PCIA after operations. We evaluated cognitive function by means of MMSE and HDS at 6 time points(12h before operation, 1h, 3h, 24h, 3d, 7d after operation), and detected the change of blood serum S-100 protein at 3 time points(12h before operation, 1h, 24h after operation).Results There were no significant difference between two groups on MMSE and HDS at 12h before operation, 1h, 3d and 7d after operation. Three hours after operation, the rate of cognitive dysfunction on MMSE in groupⅠis 41.38%, which is significantly less than 67.86% in groupⅡ(P＜0.05); 24 hours after operation, the rate of cognitive dysfunction on MMSE in groupⅠis 3.45%, which is significantly less than 21.43% in groupⅡ(P＜0.05). 3 hours after operation, the rate of cognitive dysfunction on HDS in groupⅠis 44.83%, which is significantly less than 71.43% in groupⅡ(P＜0.05); 24 hours after operation, the rate of cognitive dysfunction on HDS in groupⅠis 3.45%, which is significantly less than 21.43% in groupⅡ(P＜0.05). The were no significant differences between two groups on blood serum S-100 protein at 12h before operation, 1h and 24h after operation. At 12h before operation, 1h and 24h after operation, the blood serum S-100 protein in groupⅠis 0.058±0.008μg/L, 0.136±0.022μg/L, 0.080±0.017μg/L respectively, the blood serum S-100 protein after operations is significant more than that befor operations; At 12h before operation, 1h and 24h after operation, the blood serum S-100 protein in groupⅡis 0.059±0.008μg/L, 0.140±0.020μg/L, 0.088±0.023μg/L respectively, the blood serum S-100 protein after operations is significant more than that befor operations; there were significant differences between every tow groups (p＜0.05). There were no significant differences between two groups in same time point on blood serum S-100 protein.Conclnsion Ginkgo biloba extract (Suxuening) has preventive and therapeutic effect on old patients' cognitive dysfunction after general anesthesia at earlier period.
