Objective:To study the regional anatomy of the distal abdominal aorta in order to find out the best position to block it during surgery, and to investigate the important factors that need careful consideration during the operation. This study will provide the anatomic guidance needed to block the distal abdominal aorta.Method:27 corpses were dissected and the main branches of the distal abdominal aorta located. The distance between branches and the distance between branches and important organs around the abdominal aorta were measured and analysed statistically.Result:The distance between the inferior mesenteric artery and the lowest point of the abdominal aorta bifurcation is 4.27±0.8cm.The distance between the inferior mesenteric artery and the third transverse lumbar artery is 0.46±0.52cm.The distance between the third and fourth transverse lumbar arteries is 2.18±0.48cm.The distance between the fourth transverse lumbar artery and medial sacral artery is 1.09±0.62cm.The distance between the medial sacral artery and the lowest point of the bifurcation of the abdominal aorta is 0.53±0.37cm.The distances between the abdominal aorta to the bilateral corresponding ureter are:third, left 2.6±0.37cm,right 3.56±0.3;fourth,left 2.4±0.38cm,right 3.34±0.35cm.The distance between the vessel wall of the abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava at the level of the third transverse lumbar artery is 0.73±0.34cm,and at the level of the fourth transverse lumbar artery is 0.53±0.32cm.Conclusions:The width of the abdominal aorta is widest between the third and fourth transverse lumbar artery and this point is suitable for distal abdominal aorta blockage. The distance between the middle of the the third and fourth transverse lumbar artery and the abdominal aorta bifurcation is 2.7±0.62cm,this is the optimum position for blockage. The distance between the inferior mesenteric artery and the abdominal aorta bifurcation is 4.27±0.8cm,this can not be surpassed. The inferior vena cava is near to the abdominal aorta, and care should be taken to avoid injuring it during operation.
