Objective To investigate the difference of endothelial cell(EC) inultrastructure, markers and permeability between blood-brain barrier (BBB)andblood-nerve barrier(BNB). Methods Ultrastructure of endothelial cell was observedby electron microscopy.Employing immunohistochemical(IHC) staining the relativedistribution was determined for the OX-26,OX-47,EBA and extravasated fibrinogenaround microvessels. Theγ-glutamy transpeptidase (γ-GGT) are revealed by usingenzyme cytochemistry. Results Microvessels both in BBB and in BNB did share thesame tight junctions, however,BNB had a significantly higher number of vesicles thanthat of BBB.By immunocytochemistry and enzyme cytochemistry, microvessels inBNB showed no expression of the OX-26,OX-47,EBA andγ-GGT,but stainingweakly positive for fibrinogen; microvessels in BBB showed strong positive forOX-26,OX-47,EBA andγ-GGT, marked perivascular staining of fibrinogen was notseen. Conclusions BNB lacked the typical BBB characteristics.
