Objective: cerebral vasospasm(CVS) is a serious complication after subarachnoid hemorrhage(SAH), as well as the main reason by which the patients with SAH end with death and disability. This study is focusd on the location and expression level of S100B protein in cerebral basal ganglia at different times, by which we would explore the relationship between S100B protein and CVS as well as the mechanism of CVS after SAH.Method :The 40 healthy and clean SD rats were divided into four groups randomly: experiment groups, sham operation group, saline group and control group. The rats were executed by neck breakage and took out- sole arteries out of rats in control group, sham operation group(create a hole on the crinial bone of rats without anything injected, saline group (inject normal saline in cavitas subarachnoidealis) and experiment group(the rats who had cavitas SAH for 1, 3, 4, 7 and 14 days). Then the specimen undergone the following procedures: fixation in formalin for 24h, ozokerite embedment, dissection and HE stain. The blood vessel was observed under light microscope. In order to explain the change of S100B protein in outsole arteries of rats, we choose immunohistochemistry stain to analysis the expression of S100B protein. The data was analysised by statistical software SPSS 11.0.Results: CVS was happened 3 day after SAH, 7 day reached its peak. We found that S100B protein is mainly expressed in smooth muscle of outsole arteries, which is weakly expressed in control group, sham operation group and saline group. The change of S100B protein expression had not been found in experiment group in 1 day. However, the higher expression was happened in 3 days and reached it expression climax 7 days. Then the S100B protein was down-regulated in 14 days. In sum, there was no statistical difference between control group, sham operation group , saline group and experiment group which subjected SAH for 1 day. Conversely, there was a statistical difference between control group and experiment group which subjected SAH for 3 to 7 days. Conclusion: There were different expression levels of S100B protein when SAH was happened. In line with the aggravation of CVS, the expression of S100B protein was promoted and reached its peak expression in 7days. So we could conclude with greatly confident that there is a correlation between S100B protein expression and CVS.
