ObjectiveIn this study the haemolysis test was performed firstly, then the oral mucousmembrane irritation test was performed as the test before clinical application. Thisstudy was to evaluate the biocompatibility on the SiC implant material.MethodAccording to the standard of ISO 7405-1997(E), the haemolysis test, the oralmucous membrane irritating test were investigated on the SiC implant material.1. Haemolysis testThe SiC implant material was fashioned into 5mm diameter, 1mm thick wafer. Putthem separately in the cuvette with 10ml physiological saline solution as the testgroup, the group in distilled water and the group in physiological solutionwere taken asthe positive control group and the negative control group. Added the dilute rabbit bloodinto each cuvette. After it was centrifugated by centrifugal, we took the serum. Thenmensurated the magnitude of light that was absorbed in 545nm wavelength byspectrophotometer and calculated the rate of haemolysis.2. Oral mucous membrane irritation testThe SiC implant material was taken as the test material, and pastern as negativecontrol, and PVC(Polyviny Chloride) as positive control. All the materials were makeninto wafer with 5mm diameter and 1mm thick. These wafers were fixed to the oralcheek mucous of healthy rabbit. In two weeks the general reaction, oral mucous reaction in contacted site were observed. Then the whole mucous membrane was takenand sliced. We observed the changes in the tissue cells.Result1. Acute haemolysis testHaemolysis rate od the SiC implant material was 1.04% and was lower than 5%.Consulted ISO/TR 7405-1997(E), the SiC won't bring haemolysis.2. Oral mucous membrane irritation test. The animals' exercise and diet was nomal with two week's observation. Therewas no abnormal reaction on local mucous membrane such as hyperaemia, haemorrhage, erosion, ulcer. But there were obvious hyperaemia in the site where PVC was incontact. The tissue slicings of the SiC material showed: the epitheliums were complete, the permutations were well-distributed. All these had no significant difference withtissue slicings of the negative control group.ConclusionThe SiC implant material has good biocompatibility.
