[Objective] To study the effect of high intensity focused ultrasound on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and microvessel density (MVD) in the rabbit VX-2 hepatocellar carcinoma models.[Methods] The VX-2 tumor cells were planted in the hepatic left lobe on 40 rabbits. All animals were divided into four groups randomly: no-therapy group(n=10),post-therapy lday group (n=10),post-therapy 3 day group (n=10) and post-therapy 7 day group (n=10). The MVD and the expression of VEGF in the hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)was detected by immunohistochemical methods.[Results] The MVD and the expression of VEGF in the HCC tissue after HIFU treatment in the post-therapy lday group,post-therapy 3 day group were decreased significantly as compared with those in the no-therapy group(P<0. 01). The MVD and the expression of VEGF in the post-therapy 7 day group was rose as compared with the no-therapy group(P<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in MVD and the expression of VEGF in the post-therapy lday group and post-therapy 3 day group(P>0. 05), but they had difference as compared with those in the post-therapy 7 day group(P<0.01).[Conclusion] HIFU treatment can effectively destroy the micovessel, repress the vascularization and reduce the blood supply of the HCC.
