Objectives: To estimate the size of street-based FSW (female sex worker), and to improve the knowledge of HIV/AIDS among them, strengthen their self-protection consciousness, decrease or avoid their unsafe sex activity. Methods: Select the Leshan downtown district as the study community, and use plotting, locale counting methods to estimate the size of street-based FSW simply and quickly, and carry out comprehensive interventions for the street-based FSW, such as training, peer education, face to face conmunication, condom promotion, mass media publicizing, and so on. The researches systematically with quantitative and qualitative methods have been done on the street-based FSW's behavior characteristics and intervention effect. Results: There are 8 sites where street-based FSW frequently appeared in the downtown district of Leshan city, the size of street-based FSW is 190~225 persons. The knowledge of HIV/AIDS and proportion of safe sex of target population improve greatly than before interventions. The average score of knowledge of HIV/AIDS has changed from 6.2 to 8.5 (P<0.05), the condom use rate in last time sex has changed from 35.3% to 66.3% (P<0.05), the every time condom use rate in latest month has changed from 13.7% to 21.2% (P<0.05), and STD proportion rate has decreased from 42.2% to 24.0% (P<0.05). The knowledge of HIV/AIDS is correlated with culture degree (OR=2.46), the approach to acquire the knowledge of HIV/AIDS from medical professional (OR=5.94) and peers or friends (OR=16.76), and the intervention methods (OR=5.92). The condom use rate in latest month is correlated with age (OR=1.05), the approach to acquire the knowledge of HIV/AIDS from medical professional (OR=0.74) and the intervention methods (OR=0.48). The condom use rate in last time sex is correlated with the approach to acquire the knowledge of HIV/AIDS from newspapers or books (OR=0.11) and the intervention methods (OR=3.00). The main approach to acquire the knowledge of HIV/ADS of target population is from broadcasting and television act. Conclusions: The street-based FSW is an important part in the commercial sex trade, and they were difficult to reach, but it is even possible to reach and investigate them. After the comprehensive intervention, the knowledge of HIV/AIDS and the use rate of condom during commercial sex trade have been increased.
