Objective: To investigate the distribution of FAB subtype and the treatment effect in newly diagnosed elderly acute myeloid leukemia(AML). Methods: We reviewed 353 acute leukemia patients diagnosed in our hospital from 2000 to 2007, and 42 elderly patients of them with acute myeloid leukemia were newly diagnosed, accounting for 11.9%. We retro-spectively analyzed those clinical files, induction chemotherapy of 31 elderly AML which were both newly diagnosed and treated in our hospital. Results: AML-M2a was the most common FAB subtype in the elderly AML in our hospital, accounting for 78.6%. The overallcomplete remission rate after the first chemotherapy was 45.2%. The most death with chemotherapy in elderly AML was related to infections and cerebral bleeding, and the death rate was 12.9%. Conclusion: AML-M2a was the most common FAB subtype in the elderly AML, and the complete remission rate of elderly acute myeloid leukemia was low, it should be treated individually.
