Objective To observe the expression of aquaporin 1 (AQP1) in human lens Epithelial Cells of complicated cataract after surgical treatment of glaucoma, compare the expression of aquaporin 1 in human lens epithelial cells of complicated cataract after surgical treatment of glaucoma with in clear lens in human lens epithelial cells of age-related cataract, discuss the function of aquaporin 1 in complicated cataract after surgical treatment of glaucoma. Methods ten cases of anterior lens capsules of complicated cataract after surgical treatment of glaucoma, eight cases of anterior lens capsules of clear lens and twenty cases of anterior lens capsules of age-related cataract were collected and made into paraffin sections. Immunohistochemical techniques and computer-imaging analysis were used to localize and observe the expression of AQP1 in lens subcapsule epithelial cells. Results The expression of AQP1 was positive on the membrane of complicated cataract after surgical treatment of glaucoma, clear and age-related cataractous lens subcapsule epithelial cells. There was statistically significant difference in the AQP1 expression between complicated cataract complicated cataract after surgical treatment of glaucoma and clear lens epithelial cells (P<0.05) ,and wasn't statistically significant difference in the AQP1 expression between complicated cataract after surgical treatment of glaucoma and age-related lens epithelial cells (P=0.160).Conclusion The expression of AQP1 in lens epithelial cells of complicated cataract after surgical treatment of glaucoma was lower than in clear lens epithelial cells. AQP1 may play a physiological role in the occurrence and development of complicated cataract after glaucoma surgery .
