Purpose:To determine and compare the expression of apoptotic factors Bcl-2, Bax and Caspase-3in lens epithelial cells (LECs) of silicone oil complicated cataract patients and age-related cataract patients. Observing whether the time of the silicone oil staying in the eyes and silicone oil emulsification had impacts on silicone oil complicated cataract at the same time. Methods:Patients were classified into2groups as follows:patients’eyes with silicone oil tamponade, patients without silicone oil tamponade, and the time of the silicone oil staying in the eyes and whether silicone oil was emulsification were recorded. The anterior capsule specimens was obtained from the patients after cataract surgery, and immunohistochemical stains of Bcl-2, Bax and Caspase-3were performed. The stained anterior capsules were analyzed by reactivity scoring. Results:Each group comprised20eyes. There was a statistically significant increase in Bax and Caspase-3expression in silicone oil complicated cataract patients than in age-related cataract patients (PBax=0.000、PCaspase-3=0.000)). The Bcl-2expression expressed weakly in each group, and they have no statistically significant difference in the two group (P=0.236). The time of the silicone oil staying in the eyes had not statistically impact on silicone oil complicated cataract patients. Silicone oil emulsification also had not statistically impact on silicone oil complicated cataract patients (PBcl-2=1.000, PBax=0.109, PCaspase-3=1.000).Conclusion:The apoptosis in LECs increased in silicone oil complicated cataract patients and they had statistically significant relationship. And the apoptosis in silicone oil complicated cataract patients’LECs was caspase-3dependent apoptosis. The time of the silicone oil staying in the eyes and silicone oil emulsification had not significant impact on silicone oil complicated cataract.
