Objective To investigate the expression and significance of hTERT and Smad4 in pancreatic carcinoma. Methods The expression of hTERT and Smad4 in forty-five samples of pancreatic carcinoma tissue and matched normal tissue was detected by using antibodies against hTERT and Smad4 with immunohistochemical SP method and linked to the pathological grade, lymph node metastasis and the correlation bet-ween them were examined. Results The positive rate of the hTERT and Smad4 in pancreatic carcinoma was 91.11﹪(41/45)and 42.22﹪(19/45)respectively.Whereas the positive rate of these proteins in matched normal tissue was 13.33﹪(6/45)and 88.88﹪(40/45)respectively. The difference between them was significant(P<0.05); hTERT and Smad4 were not correlated with tumor differentiation and lymph node metastasis(P > 0.05).There was no correlation between hTERT and Smad4 expression(P >0.05).Conclusions The expression of hTERT increased significantly and the expression of Smad4 decreased in pancreatic carcinoma tissue compared with normal tissue. The change of the proteins may play an important role in development of pancreatic carcinoma. Combined examination of hTERT and Smad4 may be helpful to the research on the early diagnosis .
