Objective To study the clinical characteristics of dyslipidemia and the relationship between dyslipidemia and other components of metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in the elderly. Methods The clinical data, collected from the elderly people in some communities in Beijing who underwent annual physical examination from 1996 to 2005 in the General Hospital of PLA, were analyzed retrospectively. The coexistence of dyslipidemia with glucose metabolic disorder, hypertension and obesity, as well as its influence on cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases were analyzed. Results The prevalence of dyslipidemia was 69.61 %, in which the prevalence of hypercholesteremia and hypertriglyceridemia was 23.64 % and 26.70 % respectively. The prevalence of hypercholesteremia accompanied with hypertriglyceridemia ( mixed group ) was 19.28 %, and normal group was 30.39 %. The hypertriglyceridemia and mixed group had higher risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity than normal group and HTC group( P<0.01 ), and hypertriglyceridemia group was easier to be accompanied with hypertension than normal group and HTC group( P<0.05 ). The hypertriglyceridemia had higher risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases than normal group and HTC group( P<0.05 ). Dyslipidemia accompanied with type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension and obesity led to higher risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Conclusions The elderly people had high prevalence of dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome, which led to higher risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. The hypertriglyceridemia had a more strong impact on cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases than hypercholesteremia.
