Objective To compare the effect of two subgingival irrigation as adjunctive therapies in the treatment of chronic periodontitis. Methods 15 moderate-advanced periodontitis patients with at least 3 teeth with probing depth more than 5mm completed the study. Two teeth were irrigated with 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX) and 3% hydrogen peroxide (HP), the left one as control. Bleeding on probing (BOP) and probing depth (PD) was measured before SRP as the baseline and six weeks after the treatment..Results In the 6 weeks after Subgingival Scaling and Root Planing (SRP) in combination with irrigation,BOP reduction was 85.54%,77.76% and 68.87% respectively in 0.12% CHX,3% HP and controls, without significant difference among these groups (P>0.05) . PD reduction was 1.93,1.57 and 1.42mm respectively, 0.12% CHX was significantly higher than that in 3% HP and in controls (P<0.05) .No significant difference was found between 3% HP and controls(P>0.05).Conclusion Subgingival irrigation with 0.12% chlorhexidine combined with SRP could help improve the gingival inflammation status in treating moderate-advanced periodontitis.
