Objective The purpose of this study is to investigate the appropriate cut-offs of waist circumference for Chinese Kasak adults as a component of metabolic syndrome. Methods Based on the IDF consensus wordwild definition of the metabolic syndrome, database of 2052 chinese Kasak adults with 20-82years from Buerjin region were used to analyze the Ors of clustering of risk components by different strata of waist circumference .The sensitivity, specificity and distance in ROCcurve by different cut-offs of waist circumference for identifying two or more risk components of metabolic syndrome were estimated to find the cut-off point for men and women with the shortest distance in ROC curve. Results The ORs of clustering of risk components increased significantly with the size of waist circumference. The waist circumference(≥99cm for men,≥88cm for women) corresponded to the shortest distance in ROC curve. At these cut-offs, the rates of false positive and false negative for identifying clustering of two or more risk components were the minimum. In addition to these cut-offs, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 14.13% in men and 18.27% in women .Besides enlarge waist circumference, in these patients the combination of high blood pressure and high TG in men, and low HDL-C in women. Conclusions A Kazak person with enlarge waist circumference(≥99cm for men,≥88cm for women),who also had two or more of the following components metabolic syndrome could be defined: SBP≥130mmHg or DBP≥85mmHg; TG≥1.7mmol/L; HDL-C <1.03mmol/L for men , <1.29mmol/L for women; fasting blood glucose≥5.6mmol/L. This recommendation need further confimed in representation sample of Kazak population.
